Comfort Ratio (CR) was developed by Ted Brewer (originally created with some humor) to predict a boat’s motion comfort in a seaway, by calculating a ratio from its displacement, length, waterline length, and beam.
However, as Comfort Ratio (CR) does not account for Capsize Screening Formula, or specifically absolute Length in Waterline, Draft, or Displacement, a 6 feet radio controlled toy boat can, using the ratio, be deemed more seaworthy than a 120 feet sailing yacht.
Indeed, using a CR of 30 as the cut-off, a 6 feet toy boat with a 2 feet beam and a displacement of 300 pounds (lb) and a 5 feet length in the waterline which thus has a CSF of 34.64, is consequently rated as an offshore boat
